1. "Angie La La" by Nora Dean--Fom Dancehall Superstar of the 1970's to Blaxploitation Empress to Gospel Diva, this Jamaican singer is...something. "Angie La La" is a mind-bending, evocative, strange, and memorable jungle music/avant-garde/bossanova swing that will always make me think about summer.
2. Django Django--The eponymous debut from this British band is a wild trip. Roots of the band are the great Beta Band ("Dry the Rain"), which allows for the slightly psychedelic rock/trip-hop ethos. One of the more intriguing bands I've listened to in years.
3. Elbow--I'm trying to decide if these guys are that good, or just exceptionally good musicians writing some mildly catchy tunes. There is a little Cinematic Orchestra, a little Coldplay, and a little Bon Iver in this. Not terribly imaginative, but certainly well done. Listen to "One Day Like This" with the BBC orchestra and if you don't get goosebumps, move on. Otherwise, they are worthy of a good listen.
4. U2--It is summer, which means that The Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree occupy the first two slots in our home stereo. On TUF, "Promenade," "Fourth of July," "Bad," and "Indian Summer Sky" beg for warm summer evenings, late-night drives through Nebraska, and little league baseball. TJT's "Running to Stand Still" (#5) through "One Tree Hill" (#9) is perhaps the finest song series...ever.
5. HELP WANTED! We are hunting for a new quintessential "summer" CD for the Else Family to enjoy in 2013. Past winners are The Lumineers (2012) by The Lumineers, Helplessness Blues (2011) by Fleet Foxes, Sigh No More (2010) by Mumford & Sons, and Merriweather Post Pavillion (2009) by Animal Collective.
